First Step — How It Works

How we use AI to tutor students: better grades, less time spent doing it, a lot less stress along the way.

The Process

The core loop underneath every homework session.

1
Question Recognition
What is the question really asking? Each course has its own command words — "factor," "evaluate," "compare" — and missing their exact meaning creates uncertainty, stress and poor grades. It doesn't matter how good the work is if you're answering the wrong question.
2
First Step
The student picks the first move. Choosing the right first step at least earns partial marks, and almost always leads to the correct answer barring a calculation error along the way.
3
Work It Out
The student solves the problem and gets the guidance they need — as if their teacher were sitting beside them providing expert instruction.
4
Verification
The most avoidable step where students lose marks. A student heading for 75% on a 20-question exam who finds and corrects 3 errors through verification jumps to 90%.

The Features

Every one of these both helps the student in the moment and adds to their academic profile.

Homework Upload
Turns tonight's actual homework into guided practice — the real assignment, not a stand-in — with help the moment they're stuck, never just handed the answer.
STUDENT APP 1 Uploads a photo tonight's homework, as-is 2 Reads & matches figures out the skills being tested 3 Builds a digital copy the actual homework, not a stand-in 4 Reads the question identifies what's being asked 4a AI verifies checks the reading is correct 5 Picks the first step selects the first move 5b AI verifies checks the first move is correct 6 Works it through solves the problem 7 Guides in real time video, worked example, simpler wording 8 Verifies the work confirms it's correct 9 Remembers weak spots feeds future study guides & quizzes
Every session adds where the student is strong, where they're not, and how they think through a problem.
Homework Check
Checks homework the student has already finished — mistakes get caught that same night, instead of waiting days for a mark back from a teacher.
STUDENT APP 1 Uploads a photo homework already finished 2 Reads it figures out the skills being tested 3 Flags right & wrong marks each answer 4 Reviews feedback sees what to fix and why 5 Remembers weak spots feeds future study guides & quizzes
Even work done entirely on their own still shows what's solid and what's not.
Evening Check-in
Two short messages a day, arriving on their own like a text, at times the student picks — keeps homework from sneaking up, no nagging required.
STUDENT APP 1 School-day check-in fires due tonight, calendar, time available 2 Adds new assignments or exams anything not already in the calendar 3 Answers how much time they actually have 4 Evening check-in fires what got done, previews tomorrow
How consistently a student follows through on their own plan is its own signal.
Flashcards → open page
Quick glossary practice anyone can jump into, so a term can get drilled the second it trips someone up.
STUDENT APP 1 Opens flashcards selects a subject 2 Checks academic profile selects the right terms 3 Answers by voice or tap 4 Resurfaces struggled terms brings them back until they stick 5 Feeds the profile rolls into the academic profile
Exam Study Guide
Turns an exam date into an actual plan — study time goes toward the skills the student is weakest on, not a random re-read of the whole course.
STUDENT APP 1Exam schedule builderdate in class, adds on phone 2Selects lessons on testmarks what the exam covers 3Allocates study timetime available each day 4aBuilds & adjusts study guides 4bCompletes practice exams back and forth, right up until the exam 5Writes exam 6Predicts grade 7Uploads rubric 8Compares resultsdetermines reasons
Results shape what shows up to work on next — it gets more targeted each time.
Calendar
One unified entry point: exams, assignments, general studying, and any time allocated to any of those.
STUDENT APP 1 Creates a calendar entry 2 Indicates available prep time 3 Builds preparation plans 4 Sends alerts

Academic Profile — Intake Assessment

Parent and child each take the same assessment separately, so the report can show exactly where a parent's read on their kid differs from what the kid actually thinks — often the single most useful data point in the whole profile.

CHILD-FIRST PATH 1 Child completes it first results sent to parent 2 Parent encouraged to do their own PARENT-FIRST PATH 1 Parent completes it first invites child by email 2 Compares the two answer sets 3 Sends parent a summary where the two differ

Academic Profile

Parent and child each take the same assessment separately, so the report can show exactly where a parent's read on their kid differs from what the kid actually thinks — often the single most useful data point in the whole profile. That's the baseline. Everything else layers on top of it all term.

Homework Upload evaluates strengths & weaknesses Homework Check evaluates each step Evening Check-in evaluates follow-through Flashcards evaluates terms that trip them up Exam Study Guide builds a test from the profile Rubric marks vs expected + recommendations Calendar reminders + preparation plans Intake Assessment the baseline Academic Profile sharpens all term

Everything above layers onto the intake baseline — the student's academic profile gets increasingly sharper all term and improves from year to year.
