Stuck on a method? Ask. You get shown how — on a question like yours, never
on yours.
What it looks like
A real exchange.
YouHow do I factor a trinomial?
MeTake x² + 7x + 12.
1. Find two numbers that multiply to 12 and add to 7. 2. The pairs for 12 are 1×12, 2×6, 3×4. Only 3 and 4 add to 7. 3. Write it as (x + 3)(x + 4). 4. Check by expanding: x² + 4x + 3x + 12 ✓
Does that answer it, or do you want it on a harder one?
YouWhat if the first number isn’t 1?
MeDifferent method — here’s 2x² + 7x + 3…
Worked start to finish, on my example. Then I check whether that was the
thing you were stuck on, because often it isn’t.
And when you ask me to just do it
Youjust factor 6x² − 5x − 6
MeNot that one — that one’s yours. Here’s 4x² + 8x + 3.
1. Multiply the ends: 4 × 3 = 12. Now find two numbers that multiply to 12 and add to the middle, 8. 2. 6 and 2. 3. Split the middle term: 4x² + 6x + 2x + 3. 4. Group in pairs: 2x(2x + 3) + 1(2x + 3) → (2x + 1)(2x + 3).
Four steps. Yours has a negative on the end, so step 1 gives you a negative product — that’s the only thing that changes.
You6 × −6 is −36… −9 and 4?
MeThat’s the hard part done. Keep going.
You can ask me to do your homework. I’ll work a different question with
the same method — every step, nothing held back — and point out where yours
differs. Then you do yours, which by that point takes a minute.
Why it matters
There's a specific kind of stuck that isn't about the question in front of
you. You don't know the method at all, so no amount of re-reading helps.
That's when most students give up and ask an AI for the answer — not
because they're lazy, but because there's nothing else to do at 10pm. This is the something
else.
How it works
Ask in whatever words you have. "How do I factor a trinomial." "How do I
know if a narrator is unreliable." Half-formed is fine — working out what you're
actually asking is the first thing I do.
What you get
The method, on an example that isn't yours. You still do your own, which is
the point — and by then you can.
What you ask about goes into your profile too. Three questions about the
same method is a gap, and it changes what turns up in your next study guide.
What it saves you The night you'd have lost to not knowing where to begin.
